Another reason to love avocado smoothie bowls is that they’re super versatile. You can add whatever fruits, vegetables, and toppings you like.

5 Fun Facts About Avocados

Avocados are one of the most popular and versatile ingredients in the world, and they’re more than just a healthy snack. Here are five fun facts about this creamy, delicious fruit that you may not have known.  According to Statista, over 3 billion pounds of avocados were consumed in the US in 2021!  Here are a few other fun facts:

  1. Avocados are a fruit, not a vegetable

While avocados are commonly referred to as vegetables, they are actually a fruit. Specifically, they are a type of berry known as a drupe, which means they have a pit in the middle surrounded by flesh.

  1. Avocados are native to Central and South America

Avocados are believed to have originated in Mexico and have been cultivated in Central and South America for thousands of years. They have since spread around the world and are now grown in countries like the United States, Australia, South Africa, and Israel.

  1. Avocados have a high fat content

Avocados are known for their rich, creamy texture and are often praised for their high-fat content. In fact, avocados are one of the highest-fat fruits, with an average of 30 grams of fat per avocado. The good news is that most of the fat in avocados is monounsaturated fat, which is considered to be a healthy type of fat.

  1. Avocados can be used in a variety of ways

Avocados are incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of ways. They can be mashed and used as a spread for sandwiches and toast, added to salads for a creamy texture, or even used in smoothies and desserts. The possibilities are endless!

  1. Avocados have a long shelf life

Avocados have a relatively long shelf life compared to other fruits, making them a great ingredient to keep on hand. If an avocado is unripe, you can leave it at room temperature until it ripens, which usually takes a few days. Once an avocado is ripe, you can store it in the refrigerator to slow down the ripening process and extend its shelf life.

And if you’re not an avocado fan, you can always substitute another type of fruit or vegetable. Finally, avocado smoothie bowls are just plain delicious. They’re creamy, satisfying, and perfect for a summer snack or breakfast. So if you haven’t tried one yet, what are you waiting for?

There have been reports of cartels using the avocado trade to fund their criminal activities. In some countries, such as Mexico, the avocado industry has become a major source of income for criminal organizations, and violence has erupted over control of the trade. These groups have been known to extort money from avocado farmers and distributors, and have even been involved in theft and hijacking of avocado shipments.

In response to these issues, some governments and organizations have taken steps to address the problem. For example, the Mexican government has increased its presence in avocado-producing regions and has taken steps to regulate the industry and monitor the supply chain to reduce the influence of criminal groups.

However, the issue is complex and ongoing, and it highlights the need for increased transparency and oversight in the avocado industry. Consumers can also play a role by supporting companies and brands that have committed to ethical and sustainable sourcing practices.
