Are Rice Cakes a Healthy Breakfast?

Rice cakes can be part of a healthy breakfast when used as a base for nutrient-dense toppings. On their own, rice cakes are low in calories and fat, and some types are made from whole-grain brown rice, which can provide a source of whole grains. However, they are also low in protein and fiber and may not keep you feeling satisfied for long if eaten alone.

Here are some ways to make a rice cake breakfast more balanced and nutritious:

  1. Add Protein: Spread a layer of cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, or nut butter on your rice cake. This will increase the protein content, which can help keep you feeling full.
  2. Include Healthy Fats: Avocado or nut butter can provide healthy fats, which also contribute to satiety.
  3. Top with Fruits or Veggies: Sliced banana, berries, cucumber, or tomato can add fiber, vitamins, and minerals to your breakfast.
  4. Seeds or Nuts: Sprinkling a few chia seeds, flaxseeds, or crushed nuts on top can provide an extra nutrition boost.

In general, it’s important to ensure that your breakfast – whether it includes rice cakes or not – contains a balance of protein, fiber, and healthy fats to provide you with the nutrients you need and keep you feeling satisfied until your next meal.

What makes this recipe healthy is the use of brown rice and brown sugar. Brown rice is one of the healthiest starches and gluten alternatives.

Pro Tips for Making Rice Cakes

Making rice cakes at home can be a fun and rewarding process. Here are some tips for making them:

  1. Use the Right Rice: The type of rice you use can greatly affect the texture of your rice cakes. Glutinous rice (also known as sweet rice or sticky rice) is usually recommended because it has a higher starch content that gives the rice cakes a nice, chewy texture.
  2. Soak the Rice: Before cooking, soak the rice in water for several hours or overnight. This will help to soften the grains and make them stick together better.
  3. Rinse Well: Rinse the rice under cold water before cooking to remove any excess starch. This can help prevent the rice cakes from becoming too sticky or gummy.
  4. Steam the Rice: Steaming is often the preferred cooking method for rice cakes because it helps to keep the grains separate and prevents them from becoming too mushy.
  5. Shape While Warm: Shape the rice cakes while the rice is still warm. As it cools, it becomes more difficult to mold and may not stick together as well.
  6. Wet Your Hands: When shaping the rice cakes, keep your hands slightly wet to prevent the rice from sticking to them.
  7. Store Properly: Rice cakes can dry out quickly, so it’s best to store them in an airtight container. If you won’t be eating them within a day or two, consider freezing them to maintain their texture and freshness.

Remember, making rice cakes can take some practice, so don’t be discouraged if they don’t turn out perfectly the first time. Keep experimenting and you’ll get the hang of it!

This treat will make you drool and keep going back for more. These are light and fulfilling by not just taste but by the nutrients content too.
