One day, I woke up and heard my kids giggling in the kitchen. So I went to check them out. I saw them trying to make a cup of coffee of some sort, and they were acting as if they were on a show. In fact, they were recording themselves. I asked them what they were making, and they said “Dalgona Coffee”.
I didn’t know what Dalgona Coffee is at the time. And guess what? I came to find out that this drink became a YouTube and Tik Tok trend. It was all over the internet!
So, what is Dalgona Coffee really? In a nutshell, it is a whipped, frothy iced coffee drink. It is very simple actually. All you need is sugar, instant coffee, cold water, milk, and some ice. They are all basic ingredients that I’m sure you already have. Now, if you want to know what the hype is all about, then you should try making Dalgona Coffee.
Here’s how:
Dalgona Coffee
- Total Time: 10 minutes
- Yield: 2 1x
Description
This Korean drink is very simple, yet it has taken the internet by storm. All it takes is simple ingredients like sugar, instant coffee, and milk. You will then have a Cappuccino-like drink but the frothy coffee is on top and the milk is underneath. You should try making it!
Ingredients
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoons instant coffee
2 tablespoons cold water
Ice (for serving)
Milk (for serving)
Instructions
- Combine sugar, coffee, and water in a medium bowl.
- Vigorously whisk the mixture using a hand mixer or a whisk until the mixture turns shiny and silky smooth.
- Continue whisking until the mixture thickens and holds its lofty, foamy shape.
- Fill a glass most of the way full with milk and ice.
- Dollop and swirl the whipped coffee mixture on top.
- Serve and enjoy!
Notes
- If you are whisking by hand, it will take about 8 to 12 minutes to get the desired fluffiness. Consider an electric whisk to save you some time and effort.
- You can mix the drink before serving if you want.
- Prep Time: 10 minutes
Now that most of us are staying at home isolating and social distancing, this drink would be a fun challenge to do. Even your kids can do it. This will be even better if you grind your own beans at home, but that is for the real barristas!
Where did the name ‘Dalgona’ come from?
The truth is, this term came from an old-fashioned Korean street snack that has almost the same taste as honeycomb toffee. Dalgona coffee resembles the whipped coffee, and so a celebrity named it after that. It is like a cappuccino served upside down.
How to Store Dalgona Coffee
In case you want to make a huge batch of Dalgona coffee, you can make a large volume of the whipped coffee in advance. It should be good for a few days as long as you store it in an airtight container in the fridge. But be sure not to add the milk yet.
How Does It Taste Like?
If you ever had Starbucks Frappuccino, it is so close to the taste of Dalgona coffee. It’s like milky iced coffee. To better enjoy the taste, I highly recommend stirring it before you drink it.
