Avocado – The Super Food

Avocados are often considered a superfood due to their high nutrient content and health benefits. Here’s why they are healthy:

  1. Rich in Healthy Fats: Avocados are high in monounsaturated fats, specifically oleic acid, which is the same type of fat found in olive oil. These fats are considered heart-healthy as they can help lower bad cholesterol levels, increase good cholesterol, and potentially reduce the risk of heart disease.
  2. High in Fiber: Avocados are an excellent source of fiber, which is important for maintaining a healthy digestive system and can help regulate blood sugar levels.
  3. Loaded with Nutrients: They contain over 20 different vitamins and minerals, including potassium (more than bananas), Vitamin K, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and B-Vitamins.
  4. Antioxidant Properties: Avocados contain antioxidants like carotenoids, which are beneficial for eye health, and can also help improve the absorption of antioxidants from other foods.
  5. Low in Sugar: Unlike most fruits, avocados are low in sugar, which makes them a good choice for those watching their sugar intake.
  6. Weight Management: The fiber and healthy fats in avocados can help you feel full and satisfied, potentially aiding in weight management by reducing overeating.
  7. Bone Health: They contain vitamin K, a nutrient that’s essential for bone health. Vitamin K improves calcium absorption and reduces urinary excretion of calcium.

Remember, while avocados offer numerous health benefits, they are also high in calories due to their fat content. Like all foods, they should be consumed as part of a balanced diet.

Ingredients

Scale

2 slices whole-wheat bread

1/2 tsp Dijon mustard

1 tbsp mayonnaise

2 drops balsamic vinegar

1 slice ham, thin cut

1/2 avocado, sliced

1/2 tomato, thinly sliced

1 slice yellow cheddar cheese

1 Romanian lettuce leaf

A pinch salt

A pinch of black pepper

Instructions

  1. On a grilling pan, toast the bread.
  2. In a small bowl, add mayo, mustard, salt, pepper, and balsamic vinegar and mix well.
  3. Spread the mayo on each of the toast.
  4. Place the slice of cheddar cheese on the toast.
  5. Place ham slice on top.
  6. Add avocado and tomato slices and cover with Romanian lettuce.
  7. Lastly, place the toast in such a way that the slide of mayo spread faces downwards.

For Serving:

Serve the toast immediately.

Notes

Make sure the avocado you are using is fully ripe. You can test its ripeness by pressing your thumb against its skin. If it’s hard, the avocado is unripe. If it is very soft, it is overripe and mushy. You should look for a firm yet soft feel.

You can switch ham with prosciutto as well.

You can use alfalfa sprout in your sandwich as well.

Lastly, you can customize the sandwich according to your liking.

  • Prep Time: 5 mins
  • Cook Time: 3 mins

The mayo spread is simple yet full of flavor thanks to the Dijon mustard and balsamic vinegar. Simultaneously, the sandwich itself contains ham as a protein and cheese to give the sandwich that delicious stretch and umph.

And the best part is you can customize it in any way. You can add pickles or jalapeno to give it a tangy and spiced up flair. Whatever you choose to add to your sandwich, be sure to include avocado, tomato, ham, and Romanian lettuce for extra freshness and crunch.

What Cheese Goes With Avocado?

Avocado pairs well with a variety of cheeses, depending on the dish and personal preference. Some cheeses that complement the creamy, mild flavor of avocado are:

  1. Feta: The salty and tangy flavor of feta cheese can contrast nicely with the creaminess of avocado, particularly in salads or on toast.
  2. Mozzarella: Fresh mozzarella is mild and creamy, which pairs well with avocado in dishes like sandwiches, salads, or on a pizza.
  3. Cotija: This Mexican cheese is salty and crumbly, making it a nice contrast to avocado in dishes like tacos or guacamole.
  4. Goat Cheese: The tangy flavor of goat cheese can complement avocado in salads or on toast.
  5. Cheddar: Sharp cheddar can provide a nice flavor contrast in dishes like avocado grilled cheese sandwiches or in an omelet.
  6. Monterey Jack: This cheese melts well and has a mild flavor, making it a good choice for dishes like quesadillas or nachos with avocado.

Remember, pairing foods is largely a matter of personal preference, so feel free to experiment with different cheeses to find your favorite combination with avocado.
