Now We’re Cooking With Gas!

Are they going to take away your gas stove?

Getting right to the point, no.  But there was some concern that might be the case.  After a recent study was released by the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, belief was high that perhaps gas stoves would be banned.  The study found that about 12.7 per cent of childhood asthma cases in the U.S. could be linked to gas stove use, which is definitely not good.

Are the stats compelling?

The asthma stats are definitely a concern because no one had ever linked gas stove fumes to asthma in children, and it needs to be addressed.  Ultimately, the study forced a deeper look into gas stove health and safety issues, and there are other stats that may be surprising to some.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there are an average of 164 deaths per year in the United States due to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning caused by fuel-burning appliances, including gas stoves. The CPSC also states that there are an average of 26 deaths per year due to fires caused by gas stoves.

Additionally, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that in 2019, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated average of 8,690 home structure fires per year involving cooking equipment, of which, 42% was caused by ranges or cooktops, including gas stoves. These fires resulted in an estimated average of 480 civilian deaths, 5,240 civilian injuries, and $1.1 billion in direct property damage.

Gas is a Preferred Method for Cooking

Many home and professional chefs swear by gas as the preferred method for cooking, and it is easy to see why.  You have complete control over the temperature for rapid and consistent heating.  Moreover, the look and feel of the cooking surface is more natural and pleasing to the eye.  Cooking with gas can be more cost-effective than cooking with electricity, especially if natural gas is used as the source of fuel.  Finally, many people find that cooking with gas is more traditional and reminiscent of their childhood, which can make the cooking experience more enjoyable and satisfying.

Focus on Safety and Ventilation

Cooking with gas can be great, but ventilation is a critical component of safe gas stove usage. It is essential for removing harmful byproducts of combustion, such as carbon monoxide (CO), from the kitchen and surrounding areas. Without proper ventilation, these byproducts can accumulate and create a dangerous environment. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of ventilation around gas stoves, citing recent studies and discussing key issues related to safety.

According to a study published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology, gas stoves are a significant source of indoor air pollution. The study found that homes with gas stoves had higher levels of CO and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) than homes without gas stoves. These pollutants can have a range of negative health effects, including respiratory issues and headaches.

Proper ventilation is crucial for removing these pollutants from the home. It can be achieved through the use of range hoods, which are designed to capture and remove pollutants generated by cooking. In addition to range hoods, many modern gas stoves are equipped with built-in fans and filters that can help to improve ventilation.

Range Hoods are key to good ventilation

However, not all range hoods are created equal, and it is important to choose one that is powerful enough to effectively remove pollutants from the kitchen. According to the Home Ventilating Institute, a range hood should have a minimum airflow of 100 cubic feet per minute (CFM) for every 10 square feet of cooktop area. In addition, the hood should be installed in a location that allows it to effectively capture pollutants, such as directly above the cooktop.

In addition to range hoods, it is also essential to ensure that there is adequate fresh air intake in the kitchen. This can be achieved through the use of open windows or through the installation of a mechanical ventilation system such as an ERV or HRV.

However, it is not only the proper installation and usage of range hoods and other ventilation systems that is important, but also the regular maintenance of these systems. A clogged filter in a range hood will not only decrease its efficiency but also can be a fire hazard. It’s recommended to check and clean the filters at least once a month and to have a professional inspect and maintain the system at least once a year.  Definitely replace filters as needed.

Another important aspect of gas stove safety is proper installation and maintenance of the stove itself. Gas leaks can be extremely dangerous and can lead to serious accidents, including fires and explosions. To prevent gas leaks, it is important to have a professional install the stove and to have it inspected and maintained on a regular basis.

Alternatives to Gas

If you cannot get the proper ventilation in place for a gas stove, there are lots of alternatives.

  • Electric stoves use electricity to heat the burners or coils, which in turn heat the cookware. They offer precise temperature control and are often more energy-efficient than gas stoves.
  • Induction cooktops use electromagnetic energy to heat the cookware directly, rather than heating the burner or coils. They are highly efficient and offer precise temperature control.
  • Ceramic cooktops use electric coils to heat the cookware, but the cooking surface is made of ceramic glass. They are easy to clean and offer precise temperature control.
  • Radiant cooktops use electric coils to heat the cookware, but the cooking surface is made of glass. They offer precise temperature control and are easy to clean.
  • Microwave ovens use microwave radiation to heat food quickly. They are convenient for reheating leftovers and cooking small items, but may not be suitable for all types of cooking.
  • Convection ovens use a fan to circulate hot air and cook food more evenly than a traditional oven. They can be used for baking, roasting, and broiling.
  • Slow cookers are an energy-efficient way to cook food over an extended period of time. They are great for making soups, stews, and other dishes that benefit from a low and slow cooking process.
  • Pressure cookers use steam pressure to cook food quickly. They are great for making stews, soups, and other dishes that benefit from a high-pressure cooking process.

In conclusion…

In conclusion, proper ventilation is an essential component of safe gas stove usage. It is critical for removing harmful pollutants generated by cooking, such as CO and NO2, from the home. Proper ventilation can be achieved through the use of range hoods, fresh air intake, and regular maintenance of these systems. It is also important to ensure proper installation and maintenance of the gas stove itself to prevent gas leaks and other hazards. By taking these steps, we can help to ensure a safe and healthy environment in our homes.  Stay safe out there folks!
